The Club- today
We regularly row on the Gannel river and get out into Crantock Bay when we can get through the surf.
We are proud to be an inclusive and open club with a diverse range of members – competitive & social –and have regular social events.
In a village of around 900 people, we are proud to have nearly 100 members.

CRC was formed in March 2023 after Alex Salt generously donated funds to purchase our first gig - the Gannel Maid.
Since then, we bought Messack from Truro – funded by the generosity of people who fell in love with rowing and saw how it brought our people together. This will be renamed ‘Ada’ later this year.
In 2024, Gill & Gerald Northey acquired the Active; which they kindly let us use and is, effectively, our third gig.
We have competitive crews in men’s and women’s events and in both Vets and Supervets.
Our informal motto is ‘noli venire tandem’ – just don’t come last!
We welcome new members, so please get in touch, come along and meet us, row, sing, drink and have fun.
The club - backalong
We are very fortunate to have the Northey family as part of our club.
Back in the 1960s, George Northey was key in reinvigorating gig rowing – it has now become a global sport with teams competing from many nations as far away as Bermuda & USA.
He helped bring 5 gigs from the Scillies back to Newquay to be repaired and refurbished, then gave them back [for the price of the Active] so that the Scillies could compete; from this several clubs sprung up & set off a chain reaction of gig racing around Cornwall – and beyond.
His son & daughters [Gerald, Jayne & Gill] have been enthusiastic supporters of our club, lending advice and support, and we are proud of their family’s connection to our club. On a practical level, Gill’s daughter-in-law, Charlotte, coaches us on and off the water.
We feel & value this history and heritage as part of the glue that binds our club together.

A final note….
None of this would have been possible without the social dynamo that is Nigel Eustice – his enthusiasm, effort and contacts made all this possible.
In our formative days, we were also fortunate to welcome Danny Broderick aboard. He gave us so much – his expertise, coaching, understanding & dedication gave us confidence to keep going – and to keep rowing.
